The Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) method is a well-established technique that has been used for geophysical investigations for a long time. This method involves injecting current into the ground through electrodes and measuring the resulting potential. By calculating the resistance, the resistivity of the ground can be determined.

The variations in electrical resistivity are closely related to variations in lithology, water saturation, fluid conductivity, porosity, and permeability. These variations can be used to create maps of stratigraphic units, geological structures, sinkholes, fractures, and groundwater.

To obtain more accurate results, the ERT method is often combined with other reconnaissance geophysical methods, such as electromagnetic mapping or ground-penetrating radar (GPR). This combination helps to further narrow down any anomalous areas. Additionally, the ERT method complements other profile mapping techniques like seismic refraction and MASW.

Overall, the ERT method is a valuable tool in geophysical investigations, providing important information about the subsurface and helping to understand the geological characteristics of an area.

ERT is commonly used in environmental applications to:

  1. Estimate depth, thickness, and resistivity of subsurface layers.
  2. Estimate depth to the water table.
  3. Identify boundaries of landfill and burial pit sites.
  4. Develop a broad, low-resolution cross section of the site.
  5. Reconcile boring logs from multiple drilling efforts over time and identification of data gaps requiring further investigation.
  6. Detect high-concentration contaminant plumes and variations in hydrogeological properties using temporal imaging.
  7. Detect injected amendment or microbial distribution in the subsurface.
